Draught seals 'can save energy and cash'

Posted on 30 September 2008

Draught seals Draught proofing such as door and window seals can reduce home emissions and cut energy bills, it has been claimed.

Andrew Leech, spokesperson for the National Home Improvement Council, said insulation can also help homeowners lower costs, adding it pays to have loft insulation installed to the recommended standard of 250mm in lofts.

"If you add together all the gaps through which draughts get into an average semi-detached house, they would be the equivalent of a hole in the wall the size of nine bricks … So good draught proofing is also essential," he continued.

Mr Leech went on to say householders who choose to install smart meters can see at any time just how much energy they are consuming.

Figures released by the Energy Saving Trust indicate the installation of energy saving light bulbs can lead to substantial savings on energy bills, as lighting accounts for 10 - 15 per cent of UK electricity costs.
